The discovery of fenbendazole was part of a broader effort to improve the efficacy and safety of benzimidazole derivatives, which were already being used to treat parasitic infections in both veterinary and human medicine.

The benzimidazole class, including mebendazole and albendazole, was developed in the 1960s and 1970s, with fenbendazole emerging as a structurally modified version designed to have high efficacy against gastrointestinal parasites in livestock, pets, and other animals.
